Activities/Attractions: Patzcuaro is a cultural and artisan center for the State of Michoacan, Mexico. Patzcuaro (PAHTZ-kwah-roh) is a small colonial gem in the state of Michoacan, a land of immense natural beauty. Michoacan's countryside is a vast expanse of rolling hills, deep lakes, winding rivers and green valleys.

The state has few large cities, but rather is a quilt of small villages and towns that have changed little since the early 1800's. Its pace is leisurely, its people friendly, and its Spanish colonial and indigenous heritage rich.

"If you love history and beauty, then you must stay at the Casa de la Real Aduana when you visit Patzcuaro. This five-room inn is an exquisitely restored 16th century casa, the former home of the Spanish nobleman who oversaw the customs collection. Each room is different and each is special - filled not only with wonderful art from Mexico, but from Europe and other locations. The two proprietors, a talented photographer and a talented interior designer, are French and Mexican and have lived in different locales around the world. They are sophisticated without being in the least pretentious. In addition to running their hotel, they coordinate arts events (music and painting most recently) at the La Folia Cultural Center. The Casa is relaxed, quiet, and very comfortable. The breakfast (included in the price) is filling and excellent. The location (less than half a block from the main plaza) could not be better. A feast for the eye and a wonderful place to stay."
