Activities/Attractions: Merida is nothing like Cancun or Playa del Carmen and if you want to experience Mexican culture while staying relatively close to the Caribbean Sea then Merida is a great place to go ... there are lots of interesting shops to browse in.

Being centrally located, Merida is a practical hub to explore numerous ruin sites and ecological wonders. Many charters fly into Merida or you can take a four-hour bus ride from Cancun. There are also two highways connecting Cancun and Merida plus many roads winding their way through the jungle from Tulum.

Outstanding regional dishes and traditional music and dances local to this region can be found in restaurants, theatres and shops housed both near the main plaza and in palatial mansions along Paseo de Montejo - a boulevard fashioned after Paris' Champs Elysée. Local Sights Not to be Missed:

  • The Archaeological Museum
  • The Sculpture Walk on Paseo Montejo
  • Thursday Night at Santa Lucia Park
  • Sunday mornings downtown

"It is truly a marvelous little jewel of a place, and Sofi and Dan Bosco are a lovely couple who were always happy to provide suggestions, answer questions, make reservations or just chat. The hotel itself is in a perfect location, a short walk's distance to both the main plaza in one direction and the Paseo Montejo in the other. Our room was lovely and the place is deliciously quiet and restful; we slept with our windows open to the cool night air. Breakfasts were always wonderful and delicious, and Sofi and Dan, as well as their small and friendly staff, were always available. If you're planning a trip to this lovely old city you must stay at Marionetas ... it's a home away from home, just better!"

"We just returned from staying at this beautiful B&B in Merida and I have to say it was excellent!!! upon arrival we were given some fab advice on restaurants, local drinks and things to see whilst in Merida...Dan & Sofi (the owners) were wonderful hosts, always happy to chat to you about local life!! and the Breakfasts were wonderful. I can honestly say that we will be returning!"

"This was my second visit to Hotel Marionetas and this time we stayed at "the water room" as previous guests named it for the color combination of the walls and the typical cement tile floor, absolutely fabulous, radiated with sense of serenity-like the whole place-it just felt like a slice of paradise."

"On our first trip to Mexico, my partner and I found a hidden gem in Merida - the Hotel Marionetas. It is a beautifully designed B&B, offering spacious rooms with careful attention to furnishings and atmosphere. The owners, Sophie and Dan, and their staff are friendly, helpful and engaging. We had a wonderful time and could not have made a better choice to start our two week stay in the Yucatan. You cannot possibly go wrong with the Hotel Marionetas - it is wonderful."

"My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Marionetas in Merida for a week (Jan. 2006) and had an excellent time. This unique hotel is centrally located and within easy walking distance to the major attractions of the city. The owners Dan and Sofi go out of their way to ensure that their guests needs are being met and assist them in seeing the regional attractions both within and outside of the city."

"We were enchanted by the Hotel Marionetas. Sofie and Dan, the owners, are very helpful and give a warm personal touch unusual to find in a hotel. The place is just charming with fresh flowers, beautiful colors, and furnishings that are typical of the area. The breakfasts are most inventive and delicious. The location is perfect also, several blocks to the Plaza Grande and close to Paseo de Montejo. Without Reservation, I recommend Hotel Las Marionetas for your stay in Merida!!"

"We stayed at this wonderful hotel for three nights this past December and really enjoyed ourselves immensely. The inn keepers Daniel and Sofi are very helpful and the facility offers everything you might need. Its so close to all the major attractions of Merida but is just outside the craziness and noise. We think everyone would love it."

"We spent three short days in Merida on our recent trip to the Yucatan Peninsula. Had we known we'd have such a great time there - we would have stayed more. We stayed at the Hotel Marionetas, which is a small (8 units) bed and breakfast, with lots of character. The hotel is a historic building, within walking distance of the city square and all the historic and cultural highlights of Merida. The price is very reasonable, at $85 a night, and includes a delicious breakfast on the outdoor patio. The rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable (with a/c and fans) and the interior design and furnishings show the very fine taste of our hosts, Dan and Sofi. Our incredible hosts are really what made such a short stay so enjoyable."

"We couldn't have asked for a better choice ... in fact, as we wandered and explored the White City, we stopped by several of the other places we'd considered - none matched the overall ambiance, comfort, friendliness and location of Marionetas."

"The Hotel Marionetas is an oasis in the bustling city of Merida. Sophie and Daniel have paid attention to every detail of this exquisite hotel. From the colourful ceramic sinks in the wonderful bedrooms, to the lovely courtyard and the shady veranda, everything is perfect. The entire staff is exceptional in their ability to cater to your every need with genuine warmth and professionalism. This has truly been a five star experience for us and our family."

"Charming intimate folk arty inn. Remodeled old house with modern amenities. Delightful and helpful owners."

"Our stay at the Hotel Marionetas was blissful and relaxing. The beautiful bedrooms and courtyard are private and peaceful, providing an welcoming feeling of home. This is complimented by the presence of the staff, who were all exceptionally friendly and helpful. It is close enough to enjoy the sites of downtown without being in the midst of it. Yet close enough to allow daytrips the beaches and other of Mexico's natural wonders. This was such an enjoyable place to be a part of. We absolutely recommend the Hotel Marionetas to all travelling through Merida."

"My husband and I were staying at this beautiful, calm, neat and extremely tidy, nice B&B Hotel Marionetas at Merida, which is perfectly overseen by its friendly managers Sofi and Daniel. We enjoyed the well maintained tropical garden with pool and local style furnished patio. Had you ever had a room with 3 windows facing into three different cardinal points ? - there was always light, sun and fresh air! You don't like same global cereals for breakfast everywhere in the world ? Just see what Lourdes will prepare typical, exotic, delicious food in the morning!"

"I have been privy to so many local hotels through my business travels and the Hotel Marionetas embodies the true essence of Merida. Furthering the enjoyment of my stay was the kindness and generosity of the owners and staff. I feel like I have been adopted like family and look forward to coming back to solve my next production issues. Just an amazing experience and Inviting atmosphere. Great proximity to many local sights but far enough removed to maintain the peace and tranquility within its walls. Truly an oasis in the Yucatan."
