Activities/Attractions: Merida is nothing like Cancun or Playa del Carmen and if you want to experience Mexican culture while staying relatively close to the Caribbean Sea then Merida is a great place to go ... there are lots of interesting shops to browse in.

Being centrally located, Merida is a practical hub to explore numerous ruin sites and ecological wonders. Many charters fly into Merida or you can take a four-hour bus ride from Cancun. There are also two highways connecting Cancun and Merida plus many roads winding their way through the jungle from Tulum.

Outstanding regional dishes and traditional music and dances local to this region can be found in restaurants, theatres and shops housed both near the main plaza and in palatial mansions along Paseo de Montejo - a boulevard fashioned after Paris' Champs Elysée. Local Sights Not to be Missed:

"My husband and I stayed at Hotel Marionetas from Dec. 22 through Dec. 31; it is truly a marvelous little jewel of a place, and Sofi and Dan Bosco are a lovely couple who were always happy to provide suggestions, answer questions, make reservations or just chat. The hotel itself is in a perfect location, a short walk's distance to both the main plaza in one direction and the Paseo Montejo in the other. Our room was lovely and the place is deliciously quiet and restful; we slept with our windows open to the cool night air. Breakfasts were always wonderful and delicious, and Sofi and Dan, as well as their small and friendly staff, were always available. If you're planning a trip to this lovely old city you must stay at Marionetas ... it's a home away from home, just better!"

"We spent three short days in Merida on our recent trip to the Yucatan Peninsula. Had we known we'd have such a great time there - we would have stayed more. We stayed at the Hotel Marionetas, which is a small (8 units) bed and breakfast, with lots of character. The hotel is a historic building, within walking distance of the city square and all the historic and cultural highlights of Merida. The price is very reasonable, at $85 a night, and includes a delicious breakfast on the outdoor patio. The rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable (with a/c and fans) and the interior design and furnishings show the very fine taste of our hosts, Dan and Sofi. Our incredible hosts are really what made such a short stay so enjoyable."
