Later it became a port of entry to the Black Hills goldfields. Today, Sturgis is known world wide as "Motorcycle City USA." It hosts "Rodeos To Rallies." The city of Spearfish is the All-Four-Seasons capital of South Dakota for recreation. Located at the mouth of idyllic Spearfish Canyon, a National Scenic Byway, the community is headquarters for vacationers, hunters, fishermen and snowmobilers. Nestled on the eastern foothills of the Black Hills, Rapid City shines as the hub of this legendary region's vacation activities with five year-round museums, 17 movie theaters and eight area golf courses. To the east lie the mysterious Badlands; to the north stands Devils Tower; turn south to Wind or Jewel Cave National Parks, Custer State Park, or Crazy Horse Mountain carving now in progress; or head 23 miles to majestic Mount Rushmore.
