General Information: Welcome to The Whitfield House Bed and Breakfast ... this elegantly furnished, Nationally Registered 1782 Federal House is located on Plymouth's second oldest street in the heart of the historic waterfront district. Dr. Whitfield has restored the home and has furnished it with antiques, oriental rugs, and period accessories in a historically eclectic fashion to reflect the elegant tastes of the 18th and 19th centuries as if the home was still occupied by the original owners who profited from both the Asian and European trades. Once inside the garden gate and through the front door, the house carries you back to a gentler, more gracious period of history while still offering you the conveniences of the 21st century. Dr. Whitfield's sister, Barbara Marley of California, has come to Whitfield House to be your most welcoming hostess and to help make your stay in Plymouth an enjoyable experience. The
Blue Room: Located upstairs and at the front of the house, this
spacious room welcomes you with large shuttered windows, a working
fireplace, and an antique queen-sized carved fruit-wood canopy bed
decorated with French lace and elegant bed pillows. The living room is an invitingly elegant space furnished with objects from both the China and European trades. Guests have been known to say they felt as if they had been transported into another time as they crossed the threshold of this comfortable room. The dining room features comfortable ball-and-claw Chippendale chairs inviting you to have breakfast sitting around a reproduction inlaid walnut and satinwood table, set with Blue Willow China, silver service, Steuben Glass candlesticks and a Rose Medallion punch bowl. The large mahogany deck is located on the east side of the house. Its feeling of privacy is guaranteed by rhododendron bushes which are over one hundred and thirty-five years old, and are almost as tall as the house.
