Activities/Attractions: Hill City was once at the center of one of the three great gold mining districts in the Black Hills. (The other old gold boom towns are Deadwood and Keystone). During it's heyday as a mining camp, a contemporary writer described Hill City as "a mile of hell" because there was one solid mile of saloons and gun-play just about daily. The town's been tamed a lot since those times, first as a stop on the main stage coach route from Cheyenne to Deadwood, and later as a stop on the railroad.

Today, Hill City is still home to the Black Hills only railroad, the Black Hills Central Railroad. It's also home to the "Black Hills Institute" a private organization of dinosaur hunters who operate a  museum on Main Street. A good way to see Hill City is to take a morning train out of Keystone, walk around for a couple of hours, then take an afternoon train back.

Hill City is tourist friendly and it is the ideal base for touring the Black Hills; that is, close to almost everything. There are also a number of local artists and craftspeople who work out of Hill City. The Black Hills offer everything you expect from a mountain vacation: five national parks, scenic drives, waterfalls, abundant wildlife, acclaimed recreational trails and trout fishing. A place where bison and wild horses still roam free.

"Many thanks George, we had a great time - I can't recommend Quail's Crossing enough! The grounds and views are spectacular, and the pool and hot tub were much appreciated after a long day. What a great place to stay while visiting the black hills - perfect location and great hospitality. We're looking forward to spending another vacation there soon."

"What a fabulous little find. We decided that Hill City was our favorite of the little towns we went to - it was quaint, artsy, had a lot of services, but wasn't too over touristy. The grounds for the cabin were beautiful and we used the passes and bicycles for the Mickleson Trail. I wouldn't know, but my friend said the bicycles were top quality. The kitchen was well stocked with supplies and we saved a lot by eating several meals in. George proved to be a completely competent and accommodating host. Thanks for everything!"
