Activities/Attractions: Xcalak has the look and feel of Mexico and Belize all rolled into one; so close to Belize that English is spoken fluently by many, but Spanish is still the predominant language. This is a great place for those who are seeking the remote, less refined areas of the Caribbean Coast, with all its natural beauty above and below the waterline.

Xcalak is one of the top saltwater fly fishing, flats fishing and bonefishing areas in the world, and a less traveled but much revered scuba diving destination as well. Scuba divers and snorkelers can enjoy diving on part of the world's second longest barrier reef, and when conditions are good, even take a boat ride to the Chinchorro Bank (a large coral atoll that lies offshore with a virtual graveyard of shipwrecks that have sunk over the centuries).

The mangrove waterways of Bacalar Chico, just south of Xcalak between Mexico and Belize, are home to many varieties of birds and fish. Bird Island is a popular destination for bird watchers visiting this area, and anglers will seldom see any competition from others for coveted fish like permit, tarpon and bonefish.

• Diving, snorkeling, swimming and fishing are only minutes from our sandy beach with numerous coral heads and beautiful tropical fish in no more than 8 feet of water out in front of the villas
  
• Stingrays, lobsters, eels, turtles, octopus, groupers and barracuda are abundant. Night snorkeling is spectacular
  
• There is excellent fishing in the lagoon behind us, and inside and outside the barrier reef in front of Sandwood
  
• We have a canoe, and  4 single and 1 double kayaks and 5 bikes for your use at no extra charge. Snorkel equipment is available for rent
  
• For spectacular diving the Chincorro Banks is only 2 hours off the coast of Xcalak. The Chincorro banks are one of the four true coral atolls in the world. If you're interested we can arrange a day trip to the Chinchorro reefs which includes a 3 tank dives lunch and beverages
  
• Nature walks can be spectacular large flocks of green parrots can sometimes be seen. Bird watching for parrots, egrets, reseated spoonbills, pelicans, white ibis, jabirus storks and many more

General Information: Andy and Ruth welcome you to Sandwood Villas ... an adventure in Xcalak, Mexico. Enjoy your own private 2 bedroom, 2 bath villa with kitchenette overlooking the second largest barrier reef in the world. Xcalak is great place to scuba dive, snorkel, fish, swim, kayak, and just relax and unwind.

Xcalak, in southern Quintana Roo, is part of what is known as La Costa Maya - a rustic but beautiful part of the Mexican Caribbean, south of the Riviera Maya. Xcalak is just 7 miles by water from the Central American country of Belize. 

Villa #1 has one queen, double and single bed.
Villa #2 on our second floor has double bed and two twins.
Villa #3 on our second floor has a: one queen, two twin or one king size bed.

Meals at Sandwood in consist of delicious local and American fare. Breakfast features fresh tropical fruits and juices with homemade breads and tortillas in the Palapa. The dinner menu offers fresh seafood, chicken, pork, fish, conch, and lobster (our specialty). Lunch and snacks are available. All meals are served in the Palapa or your villa. Our Palapa restaurant bar offers an assortment of local beers, sodas, wines and spirits at low prices.

If you plan to cook your meals, bring groceries, snacks, etc. We have 5 small grocery stores in Xcalak and we have a grocery truck at our door 4 times a week. Purified water is provided in each villa. Staple groceries, pop, and beer are provided at low prices.
