Nestling between the Irish Sea and the Pennine Moors, Lancashire boasts lively coastal resorts which have drawn visitors for decades; elegant city centres with graceful architecture and cultural delights; and time-honoured mill towns, where hi-tech businesses flourish alongside more traditional industries. The fourth largest shire county, Lancashire is located in the central north west of England, and the village of Dunsop Bridge in the Ribble Valley has the unique honour of being the officially designated exact centre of the British Isles. The county is rich in natural beauty, from wild moorland with dry stone walls and free-roaming sheep, to gentle farmland and shady woodlands. There are dozens of traditional villages and hamlets throughout the county, many with ancient churches, picturesque pubs and village greens. The Journey Through the Centre of the Kingdom' 46-mile way marked walk is certainly the most adventurous route to take, beginning at the Norman Castle in the historic market town of Clitheroe, passing a ruined Cistercian Abbey and medieval churches set in one of the most unspoilt Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the Forest of Bowland. Idyllic country life continues as it always has done throughout the area in the treasure trove of well preserved villages, some of which have deservedly been celebrated by the media. The quiet country lanes, footpaths and bridleways make exploration a real pleasure, whether walking, cycling, on horseback or touring by car, providing panoramic views of dramatic hills and fells, valleys, woodland and wild moorland, filled with fascinating wildlife. "Fantastic people. Fantastic comfort. Fantastic value. Rose Cottage is just like a home from home. I would recommend it to anyone." |
