Once known for its fishing fleet and granite industry, it is considered the gateway to Schoodic Peninsula, home to the only portion of Acadia National Park on the mainland. Consequently, in June of 2000, Sullivan was designated as U.S. Route One's western starting point for the Schoodic Scenic Byway. Sullivan has Downeast-style architecture set around a central common with outstanding views south to Frenchman Bay and Mount Desert Island (site of the main section of Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor). The Schoodic Scenic Byway travels through the eastern seaboard, including the "quiet" side of Acadia National Park. The landscape remains unspoiled, revealing a part of Maine where lobstering and clamming are still a tradition. Discover the local artisans' crafts, and let the mountains, coastal islands, historic buildings, and lighthouses enchant you. Traveling around the Schoodic Peninsula is an unexpected experience. This uncrowded area allows travelers to pass through the stunning scenery with a feeling of solitude and discovery. This byway takes the traveler along the coast through quaint fishing villages, vernacular architecture, and striking, serene Atlantic views. And of course, there is Acadia National Park with its 100 miles of hiking trails, 50 miles of groomed carriage trails, and a 27 mile paved Park loop road. Acadia includes more than 40,000 acres and miles of rocky shore between its sites on Mt. Desert Island and Schoodic Peninsula. Acadia is one of the most accessible parks in the nation. Favorite stops include Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, Precipice Trail and Cadillac Mountain – the highest point on the eastern seaboard north of Rio de Janeiro. |
