It has maintained its historic fabric over the centuries, the original Gothic constructions forming part of the town's identity. As one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe, Brugge developed cultural links to several parts of the world, however, artistically, it is most closely associated with the school of Flemish Primitive paintings. The compact size of the old city, lined with canals, make it perfect for exploring on foot. The historic centre of Brugge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perhaps the most astonishing thing about Bruges is the consistently warm welcome its residents provide to the swarms of visitors. The basis for this is more than mere economics - those who live in Bruges love their city and can well appreciate that others want to experience it.
