Built on a promontory (a rarity in the Alentejo plain), the medieval castle town of Monsaraz rises like a scene from some enchanted tale, past and present mingling in a unique feast of unparalleled beauty and history.

Only five minutes on the road from Monte Saraz, this settlement is one of the oldest in Portugal, preserving almost untouched the whitewashed row of houses of limestone and schist, the castle and the walls, the churches and the old courts, with their precious frescos.

Occupied since prehistoric times because of its privileged defensive position (the surrounding megalithic monuments prove this), it was inhabited successively by the Romans, Arabs, Jews and Christians, providing the visitor with a surprising incursion into the history of the Iberian Peninsula.

"Charming and well decorated. Monte Saraz is a very nice place indeed. It has been decorated recently by the new owner in a minimalistic way, which allows you to stay with comfort and tranquility in restored Alentejan cottages. General Information: Welcome to Monte Saraz in Monsaraz, Portugal ... an eighteenth-century 'Monte' (a typical Alentejo farming estate) which has been restored to its original state, offering repose and quality during your stay, provided in comfortable, separate farmhouses or in suites located in the main building.

In Monte Saraz you can find tranquility at any time of year, be it by the warmth of a good hearth or swimming in the swimming-pool shaped by the arches of an old olive oil press. Surrounded by an ancient olive grove, by vegetable plots and orchards, it hints at a scenery worthy of Paradise, designed for those who appreciate the good things in life..

• Apart from the elegance of its traditional architecture, Monte Saraz offers the comfort found in any modern residence (such as central heating)

• At night, you can have dinner under the starry sky, close to the swimming-pool, having as scenery the illuminated medieval castle town of Monsaraz and, as musical accompaniment, the chirrups of crickets and cicadas

"This is a great place to stay to explore some of the Alentejo. Very pretty place with lovely pool and great views of Monsaraz. Breakfast great and some lovely restaurants nearby. Rooms are great - some self contained apartments. Well worth visiting and they accepted my little dog."
