Today, though, a laid-back attitude pervades the town, the perfect place to absorb the area's history and magnificent wildlife. The City of Lamar (County Seat of Prowers County) serves as the industrial and retail center for southeast Colorado. Located in the fertile Arkansas River Valley, the surrounding agricultural landscape features wide-open spaces with panoramic views of irrigated corn and alfalfa fields, as well as dryland wheat fields. Lamar offers rural family living at its best. Solid family values still prevail in this community, with numerous events and activities scheduled throughout the year. Whether you enjoy outdoor activities, community concerts, or a relaxed shopping atmosphere, our friendly community welcomes you. Visitors and guests can find a variety of recreational activities, historically significant sites and western traditions to visit or attend year round in Prowers County. Many fine restaurants and places to stay afford comfort and convenience. Other special events include The annual Air Show & Fly-In, Oktoberfest, Cinco De Mayo Celebration, Little Britches Rodeo at the Prowers County Fair Grounds, Lamar Day’s, Car Show at Lamar City Park, Thunder on the Plains Bike Rally, Sidewalk Sales, Sand & Sage Fair & Rodeo, Moonlight Madness, and the annual Parade of Lights. There is always something happening in Lamar and their Colorado Welcome Center can give you more details. Just a few miles north of Lamar on Highway 287 is the town of Eads. With a population just a little over 800 and an elevation of 4,213', Eads is the gateway to the Great Plains Reservoirs, the Kiowa County Historical Museum and, just down the road, is Camp Amache, the ruins of a Japanese internment camp created during World War II. |
