But Townsend's main appeal and attraction is its proximity to Cades Cove, the single most popular attraction in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cades Cove consists of an 11 mile loop around a spectacularly beautiful cove where several hundred pioneers lived during the 19th century. Today the Cove is home to preserved historical structures, wildlife including whitetail deer and black bears. In addition, the Townsend, Tennessee area and Cades Cove host several major trail heads to popular hiking trails.
