In the heart of Haines is Historic Port Chilkoot, known as Fort Seward, the first U.S. Army fort built in Alaska in 1904. Haines is also the home of Alaska Indian Arts, where totem carving and silversmithing activities can be found. The Chilkat Center for the arts has the world famous Chilkat Dancers and, of course, there is always the popular Salmon Bake. Haines is also home to the Sheldon Museum with its collection of artefacts from yesteryear. The nearby Bald Eagle Preserve attracts naturalists and bird watchers from all over the world to observe the world's largest concentration of these magnificent birds. While in Haines, take a tour to Glacier Bay by sea or by air, go whale watching, take a fishing charter or a river trip. Also visit the Haines State Parks where biking, hiking, and kayaking are available. Along the way, you may see wild game such as moose, bear, wolves, mountain goats and sheep. |
